Welcome to another Movie Poster Masterclass from Big Picture Co. This series is designed to help independent filmmakers understand the professional marketing strategies used by major studios—and how those same techniques can be applied to independent productions without studio-sized budgets.

In this Masterclass, we're exploring one of the most overlooked aspects of movie marketing: choosing the right poster size. A successful movie poster isn't designed for just one destination. It needs to perform equally well on FilmFreeway, at film festivals, across streaming platforms, and throughout your social media campaign.

FilmFreeway is Your Starting Line

For many independent filmmakers, FilmFreeway is the first public home for their film. That's why we often recommend designing around FilmFreeway's preferred specifications first, then creating professionally composed breakouts for every other marketing need.

Masterclass Lesson #1: Design for Every Destination

One of the first lessons we teach our clients is that there is no such thing as "just one movie poster." A professional key art campaign begins by identifying every place the artwork will appear before the first concept is created.

FilmFreeway is Your Starting Line

For many independent filmmakers, FilmFreeway is the first public home for their film. That's why we often recommend designing around FilmFreeway's preferred specifications first, then creating professionally composed breakouts for every other marketing need.

A great movie poster doesn't just sell your film—it has to work everywhere your audience discovers it.

Independent filmmakers often think of a movie poster as a single image. In reality, your key art needs to adapt to dozens of different sizes for film festivals, streaming platforms, social media, press kits, websites, and printed displays.

At Big Picture Co, one of the first questions we ask every client isn't "What style do you want?" It's:

"Where will this poster be used?"

Planning for every application before design begins ensures your artwork remains impactful no matter where it appears, while eliminating expensive redesigns later in your marketing campaign.

Start With Your Festival Strategy

For many independent filmmakers, FilmFreeway is the first destination after completing a film.

FilmFreeway recommends promotional artwork using a 2:3 vertical aspect ratio.

Current recommended upload specifications include:

  • 1400 × 2100 pixels

  • Portrait (2:3 ratio)

  • JPG or PNG

  • Under 10 MB

  • 300 DPI recommended

These specifications provide an excellent digital master for festival submissions while maintaining high visual quality.

You can review the latest submission recommendations directly on FilmFreeway before uploading your project. You can also view Big Picture Co founder Steven Caceres' professional FilmFreeway profile here:

Our Preferred Print Master

For most independent productions in the United States, Big Picture Co recommends building the master artwork at:

27" × 40" at 200 DPI

This provides excellent print quality while keeping working files manageable during production.

From this master file we create all required digital breakouts, preserving the integrity of the original composition rather than simply stretching or cropping artwork.

Streaming Platforms Need Different Artwork

Today's film posters rarely stay vertical.

Once distribution begins, streaming platforms often require multiple landscape and square versions for different interfaces.

A poster that works beautifully in theaters may lose its impact when automatically cropped for streaming thumbnails.

During the initial design phase we discuss every intended destination, including:

  • Streaming platforms

  • TVOD services

  • AVOD platforms

  • Press kits

  • Distributor sell sheets

  • Websites

  • Email campaigns

  • Digital advertising

Planning these breakouts from the beginning ensures the artwork works everywhere your audience encounters your film.

Don't Forget Social Media

Social media isn't one size fits all.

Each platform favors different dimensions.

Instagram Feed
  • 1080 × 1350 (Portrait 4:5)

  • 1080 × 1080 (Square)

Instagram Reels
  • 1080 × 1920 (9:16 Vertical)

Facebook
  • 1200 × 1500

  • Landscape graphics for event promotion

YouTube Thumbnail
  • 1280 × 720

A poster designed only for theatrical presentation may require thoughtful repositioning of artwork and typography to remain effective across these formats.

The biggest mistake independent filmmakers make isn't choosing the wrong poster size—it's designing for only one destination.

Professional entertainment agencies don't create a single poster. They create a complete key art campaign designed to work across theatrical one-sheets, FilmFreeway submissions, film festivals, streaming services, digital advertising, websites, and social media.

At Big Picture Co, we bring that same studio mindset to independent filmmakers. Before we begin designing your poster, we discuss every platform your film will appear on, allowing us to create artwork that adapts seamlessly without sacrificing visual impact.

That's the difference between creating a poster and creating professional key art.
